Step beyond the indoor wall and discover a lifetime of adventure on real rock. Our Learn to Lead Sport Climbing course gives you the skills, confidence, and judgment to climb safely on bolted crags across the UK and abroad.
You will be taught by highly experienced, fully qualified instructors, and we provide all the technical equipment you need for the course. Whether your goal is a local limestone crag or a European sport climbing holiday, this course is designed to get you there.
What You Will Learn
By the end of this course you will understand and practise:
Lead belaying & dynamic belaying
How to give safe, soft catches, manage slack, and communicate clearly with your climbing partner.
Safe clipping technique
Efficient and secure clipping from good stances, avoiding back-clipping and z-clipping.
Using equipment on bolted routes
How to attach quickdraws, use clip sticks appropriately, and manage your kit on the harness.
Guidebooks & route choice
How to read guidebooks and apps, choose appropriate routes for your level, and assess conditions.
Fall management & risk awareness
Understanding fall zones, when and how to take practice falls, and managing the mental side of falling.
Setting up top ropes on sport routes
Building safe top-rope systems from bolted anchors and cleaning routes correctly.
Our focus is always on safe systems, good habits, and real-world decision making, so you leave ready to climb independently.
Who This Course Is For (Prior Experience)
This course is ideal if:
You are already leading indoors at your local wall, or
You top rope comfortably indoors and are ready to progress towards lead climbing on rock.
Before joining the course, you should be able to:
Put on your own harness correctly
Tie in to your harness with a suitable knot
Belay safely, including taking in and lowering a climber
Feel reasonably confident climbing on rock (or be keen and ready to try!)
